What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendons, the thick fibrous cords that attach your muscles to your bones.

Tendonitis is characterized by feelings of pain and tenderness just outside the affected joint. It can happen in any tendon, but it most commonly occurs in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels.

Types of Tendonitis

Tendonitis may occur in many different forms:

  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) — Characterized by pain in the forearm and inside of your elbow on the side of your arm closest to you, when your arm is by your side with your palm facing backward. Tennis elbow is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist away from the palm.
  • Medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow or baseball elbow) — With golfer’s elbow, pain is felt from the elbow to the wrist on the inside of the forearm. This type of tendonitis is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist toward the palm.
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis (biceps tendonitis) — A shoulder disorder that causes inflammation of the shoulder capsule and related tendons.
  • DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis — The most common type of tenosynovitis, which is a type of tendonitis. DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis is swelling of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist that attach to the base of the thumb.
  • Trigger finger or trigger thumb tenosynovitis — Characterized by the tendon sheathes in your fingers and/or thumbs becoming inflamed and thickened. This makes extending or flexing your fingers or thumbs very difficult, and may also cause your finger or thumb to lock, or “trigger”, suddenly.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid that naturally occurs in the hemp plant. It’s one of more than 100 cannabinoids – natural compounds – in hemp, and it’s one of the most popular due to its wide-ranging benefits and uses.

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. It’s federally legal as of the 2018 Farm Bill

Preliminary research indicates that CBD may be effective for pain, anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, inflammation, and much more, and many people have found it beneficial for tendonitis.

Does CBD Cream Help With Tendonitis?

Yes, CBD cream may help with tendonitis.

Although there isn’t much research on using CBD for tendonitis, there is research on using CBD for arthritis, to which tendonitis is related. There is also general research suggesting CBD may be beneficial for pain and inflammation.

One study found that CBD topicals (such as creams) have therapeutic potential for pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Other studies show CBD is beneficial for pain and inflammation in the joints.

Arthritis is the inflammation within a joint or directly around it, whereas tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendons, which connect muscles to bones.

Although CBD creams haven’t been shown to stop inflammation in the tendons, they have therapeutic potential to address the resulting discomfort, as indicated by the research on arthritis.

This type of short-term relaxation is often what people are looking for while they seek more long-term treatments for tendonitis.

CBD Topicals for Tendonitis

CBD Cream: Safety & Side Effects

A research review found that CBD is generally safe to use. CBD is a safe supplement in both oral and topical forms.

CBD topicals do not reach the bloodstream, and therefore will not cause the types of side effects associated with oral products.

However, there are a few precautions you’ll want to take when using CBD creams and other topicals:

  • Don’t ingest them; topicals are made for external use only.
  • To avoid irritation and/or infection, don’t apply topicals to sores, open wounds, or broken skin.
  • Understand that some ingredients in topicals may cause skin irritation; this underscores the importance of carefully selecting a product based on the ingredients you know do and do not work with your skin.

As a final precaution, be sure to talk to your doctor about your condition before using CBD – it can interact with some medications, and it may not be the right choice for everyone. Even though CBD topicals don’t reach the bloodstream, it’s best to play it safe.

How to Use CBD Cream for Tendonitis

Here are a few tips and some other information to help you get the most out of using CBD cream for tendonitis:

Follow safety precautions

As we covered in the section above, CBD topicals are generally safe, but you’ll still want to check with your doctor before using them to ensure they’re the right choice for you. You’ll also want to avoid applying CBD topicals to damaged skin.

Additionally, once you buy a new topical, you’ll want to test how it works with your skin by first conducting a small patch test: rub a little bit of the CBD topical into your wrist and monitor for any irritation before applying it elsewhere.

Reference CBD topical dosage guidelines

Although topicals can’t be dosed as oral CBD products can, you’ll still want to follow rough dosage guidelines to ensure you’re using enough CBD cream for it to be effective (or whichever product you have) without over-applying.

This will also help your product to last a little bit longer; you’ll be able to use it more efficiently.

For pain, the right dose can typically be found with the following formula:

(0.3) x (your body weight in lbs.) = your topical CBD dosage in mg.

Aim to get this amount of CBD in each application of your topical.

For more, see our CBD dosage calculator and chart.

Apply it thoroughly

Best practices for applying topicals will vary by product – see the instructions on your product – but be sure to rub your cream, salve, balm, roll-on, or other product thoroughly into the affected areas to see the best results.

How to Shop for CBD Cream

Although we’ve reviewed and presented our opinion on the best CBD cream for tendonitis, you may still be looking for something else – that’s why understanding how to shop for CBD cream and other topicals is important:

Make sure it’s 3rd-party lab tested

The FDA doesn’t yet regulate the CBD industry, so that means you have to. To verify the safety and potency of the products you buy, look for CBD topicals with up-to-date lab testing reports prepared by 3rd-party labs.

When examining a 3rd-party lab report, make sure the product contains the amount of cannabinoids it is supposed to – according to its label – and that it passes tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and molds.

Check what type of CBD it contains

There are three main types of CBD:

  • Full-spectrum CBD – CBD that also contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other components that naturally occur in hemp.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD – The exact same as full-spectrum CBD, but without the THC.
  • CBD Isolate – Just CBD, with nothing else.

When you’re evaluating topical, be sure you understand what type of CBD it contains, and ensure it’s the kind that would be best for you. Due to the range of compounds it contains, full-spectrum CBD is generally the most beneficial type of CBD.

However, if you have to undergo drug testing for work or other reasons, you might opt for a broad-spectrum or isolate product to be doubly sure that no THC is anywhere near your body.

Check the potency

Most CBD topical products contain 3-8 mg of CBD per application. Based on your needs, you may want a product that contains more CBD, or if you’re new to CBD, you might feel more comfortable with a product containing less.

Either way, be sure to understand how much total CBD a product contains so that you can find something that fits your needs.

Conclusion: What’s the Best CBD Cream for Tendonitis in 2024?

As you might be able to tell from the variety of CBD creams and topicals we discussed in this article, there is no best CBD topical – there’s only the product that works best for your specific needs.

We hope that at least one of the options presented in this article helps you achieve a better quality of life, or at least that this article pointed you in the right direction.

Just be sure that once you’ve selected your perfect product, you follow safety precautions and use it carefully to achieve the best results.

Best CBD Cream for Tendonitis: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions our customers ask us when deciding what CBD topical to choose for tendonitis.

What is the best CBD cream to use for arthritis?

There are many amazing CBD cream products out there, but generally, the best CBD creams for arthritis will be higher-potency (1500-2000mg or more of CBD) and made with full-spectrum CBD to render maximum relaxation.

Does CBD rub reduce inflammation?

Research and anecdotal evidence suggests CBD topicals, such as CBD rub, have therapeutic potential for pain and inflammation.

What are the side effects of CBD cream for pain?

While researchers consider CBD topicals well-tolerated and safe to use, CBD cream may cause skin irritation, even if it’s made from natural ingredients.

Tendonitis takes time and consistency to treat, but many people need something that will help them deal with the discomfort in the meantime.

While some people find success with traditional methods like physical therapy and over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen and Aspirin, others have been seeking out a natural alternative: hemp-derived CBD.
